EDUCATION

“Striving for Excellence” is the motto for the Union County School System.  Our schools are reaching this goal with continuous evaluations of the current teaching styles, curriculum, and environments.  An earnest effort is being made to ensure that every child, no matter what race, gender, or ability, is given the opportunity, support and encouragement to learn and succeed.

Growth has been prevalent in Union County for the last several years, resulting in a large increase in the population.  Schools county-wide became overcrowded.  A new high school was built, freeing the old school for a junior high school, alleviating overcrowding in the four elementary schools.

We are very proud of our “state of the art” high school which opened in 1997 and boasts a very nice art department, science laboratory, and music suite; luxuries we have never enjoyed before.  The vocational department is exceptional with auto mechanics, building trades, cosmetology department, horticulture (complete with a green house), drafting and computer science-labs.  Our vocational students are heavily recruited for industry in both Union and Knox Counties due to their quality work performance and ethics.  Union County High School Vocational Department also offers co-op, dual credit courses and opportunities for the occupational bound graduate.

Our academic courses are constantly being evaluated and changed with the implementation of an improvement plan to ensure our students that pursue higher education are prepared to enter college.  Union County High School implemented the College Board Advanced Program which currently offers AP English, Calculus, and United States History.

In addition to our high school, middle school, and four elementary schools, we have an adult high school, a GED Plus Two program, an alternative school (a new building is currently under construction), one family resource center, an outdoor classroom, one maintenance center and a Vocational Rehabilitation Center.

School facilities by name and enrollment in each are as follows:

      Big Ridge Elementary                   230

            Luttrell Elementary                     330

      Maynardville Elementary               710
